Overall Rating: 10/10

Life after the American civil war is tough - and not just because there are zombies everywhere. Jane McKeene comes to realize that the living (and their prejudices) are far more dangerous than the undead.

This book is masterfully written: the heroine is likeable while being an unreliable narrator, the dynamic between Jane and her frenemy Katherine is enjoyable and complex, and the story does a great job of exposing the racism against Black and Indigenous people that still exists to this day. If you like alternate history-style books, check this one out.
