House Atreides leave their home planet of Caladan to take over the fief of Arrakis (a.k.a. Dune) from evil House Harkonnen. However things are not as they seem, as the Emperor, with his warrior fanatic Sardakaur, the mysterious Spacing Guild (with their monopoly on intergalactic travel), the warrior "witches" Bene Gesserit, CHOAM and other houses all vie for power, and control of the essential spice drug "Melange".
I really enjoyed reading about giant sandworms, ecology, warrior societies, transformative dreams of an awakening people, martial arts brought to near super-human levels and "desert power". This "classic" best Sci-fi novel of all time continued as a trilogy and was made into a blockbuster movie, but it did finally end, leaving me wanting more.
I'd recommend this to fans of science fiction, mysticism, martial arts, mind expansion and wildly imaginative, cohesive worlds.
