Henry (Hal) Courtney saw his father executed in battle and spent his youth avenging this death. Now he is a man with his own ship, crew and family. However, his wife - the fearless warrior Judith Nazet - and his unborn child are captured by a powerful enemy and sold on the auction block in the slave markets of Zanzibar. Hal must track his nemesis across desert and ocean if he is to have any hope of their recovery.

I really enjoyed the way Wilbur Smith brings the history and feel of these times to life. You can almost feel as if you are walking the streets of Zanzibar or the deck of a fast sailing warship. I wish the author would have spent more time on the naval conflict between the forces of Christianity and Islam and feel this would have made the book more interesting and historically relevant.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or who enjoys immersing themselves in the past replete with some high adventure. If you want to know what was it like during these times, Wilbur Smith can take you there.
