It's WW2, at the height of the Nazi regime, and Lida has been taken from her native Ukraine to be an Ostarbeiter in a concentration camp. The story details the horrific experiences she lived through and her determination to find her sister again.
First of all, this book is very well researched. The author used first-person testimonials as part of the information that informed her writing, and it shows. While the book is clearly written for a younger age group (it uses relatively simple language and literal descriptions rather than figurative ones), it is still a very engaging story. It's a good reminder that Jews were not the only group persecuted by the Nazis.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about WW2, especially less confident readers.
