A rebellious witch and a talking cat - no, I'm not talking about Sabrina. Eleanor and her reluctant roommate (who she turned into a cat) Stan are investigating a missing witch in Liberty, the state-turned-country formerly known as Texas. In Liberty, water is rationed, marches are scheduled, people are taken, and the truth is just fake news. Full of wacky characters, an unravelling mystery, and modern day witchcraft, The Splendid City is a satire on the American politics we're all too familiar with.

I did not like this book. Like, at all. The topic is something I could be interested in knowing more about, as I think satire is a good learning tool for tricky (and subjective) subjects. However, the style in which this novel is written is awful to me. I can see it's trying to be pithy and witty, but it comes across as "XD sOOooOO rAnDoM" energy I left behind in my own middle school days. The characters are not interesting, the plot is messy, and the style is just not for me.

There may be someone out there that this book is for? But I can't think of anyone.
