Overall Rating: 8/10
The author of "This Book Could Fix your Life", Helen Thomson, does not claim to be a self-help expert or enthusiast, but rather created a book during the COVID lockdown that is supported by the latest (and sometimes changing) research on topics that could improve one's overall health.
The chapters in this book cover the science behind topics ranging from how to not worry, how to be happy, how to make friends, and how to sleep better to topics such as how to be smarter and wiser and how to get ahead in life. The appeal of these topics draws one in. The author combines personal anecdotes with the science-based studies available to engage readers in an easy-to-follow book. At the end of each chapter the author summarizes key points in bullet form with a tool icon, which is handy for those of us needing a recap of what we just read. I personally found the research studies included to be informative and reinforcing of some of the things I knew I should be doing anyway (such as good dental health helps ward off Alzheimer's disease and the cognitive benefits of daily twenty minute naps). For some, the research studies quoted in this book may slow the pace of the read and therefore might not be for everyone. In those instances I would recommend skipping to the back and reading the summary with the tools.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to reinforce or learn good practices to improving one's overall health. Especially for those who like to know the "why" behind best practices.
