The Justice Education Society of BC has put together an excellent set of lessons and resources for Social Studies K-12 relating to law. They include curricular competencies and FPPL.

Although many of these lesson plans from UBC are aimed at younger grades, there are a number that will work for 8/9s.

This link is specifically to the Pathways section, which explores resources, lessons, and primary sources relating to specific themes in BC history. Some Pathways allow you to borrow kits of artifacts from the museum!

The virtual field trips are unfortunately not free, but there are some free lesson plans and great primary and secondary sources available for everyone.

Want to play detective? Great Unsolved Mysteries of Canadian History provides students with primary documents and testimony and encourages them to "solve" the crimes that took place in our nation's past. It's very text heavy, but there are is some awesome learning here. Each mystery is fully bilingual.

This game could be used as a follow-up to talking about the scramble for Africa, as it does not address the tragedy and dire consequences for native Africans (and it fully acknowledges this) and assumes students have some background knowledge. This puts students in the perspectives of the colonizing nations and simulates the scramble for resources. Fully web-based.

An incredible collection of historical film, including movie clips, musical performances, newsreels, and more. The search filters are very easy to navigate and quite comprehensive, and results will define specific scenes of interest for each video.

While this is a listicle, it's a great collection of ancient maps that show how different cultures perceived the world around them at different times.
